The Burns Lake Saddle Club (BLSC), formerly known as the Tweedsmuir Cavaliers Saddle Club (TCSC), first came into existence in 1960. A group of equine enthusiasts from the Lakes District got together and formed the club with a focus on creating opportunities to compete. The TCSC built a facility out at the old “Tweedsmuir Downs,” later moving with the Fair when water issues were causing limitations at the old grounds. The club set up in lower area of the Eagle Creek grounds and built an arena, an announcer’s booth, and equipment for use in the horse shows. There was a need for a safe warm up area for the equestrians, so a second dressage sized arena was built that also doubles as a location for trail classes.
Over the years, the club has been very active, holding up to half a dozen shows and gymkhanas a year. They brought in clinicians, coaches and trainers from the surrounding areas that provided training for club members of all levels so that they could develop their skills for recreation and competition. Riders improved their horsemanship and were able to compete in the club shows, larger shows such as the Bulkley Valley Exhibition in Smithers, and various shows hosted in Prince George. BLSC has also held events that appeal to recreational riders such as Poker Rides, Cowboy Polo, and games days.
Currently, the club is making an effort to promote competitive and recreational equestrian sport in the Lakes District and develop events that will draw in riders of all ages from different backgrounds and disciplines. The current focus of the club is to host clinics that appeal to its members, continue with popular events like the annual Poker Ride and Fall Fair Horse Show, and to come up with innovative ways to increase levels of participation in the club and to help develop the Lakes District equestrian community.
